History of Baseball in the Tweed Shire Council

While Baseball was played in the Tweed Shire many years ago, there is no evidence available with worthwhile details. At the start of the 2016/17 season after a small recruitment program, more players were attracted from Tweed Shire and because of this we found it necessary to commence playing in Tweed and leased the playing field at Greenway Drive, Banora Point forming a four team program over the Summer Season.

Realising the potential of the Tweed area, we decided to conduct a more extensive recruitment program at the start of the 2017/18 Season and we conducted a four team T-Ball program and a four team Rookie Ball program.

In 2018/19 our numbers increase and in 2019/20, we Incorporated the Northern Rivers Baseball Club and as well as local teams, we entered two teams in the Gold Coast Baseball Association’s Junior League and Senior League.

On the 18th March 2019 we incorporated the Northern Rivers Baseball Club, Affiliated through the Gold Coast Baseball Association with Baseball Queensland.

The 2020/21 season saw Tweed “locked down” by the NSW Government due to Covid and this lost us many players and we could only enter two teams in the GCBA. The 2021/22 season was worse as the Border was closed by the Qld Government and we had a total of 20 players of varying ages playing a game each week at Banora Point.

Looking ahead, on the 4th July 2022, we changed our name to the “Northern Rivers Baseball Association Inc” and Affiliated with Baseball NSW.

The 2022/23 Summer Season saw a 56% increase in players and we conducted a local T-Ball program as well as entering three teams in the GCBA competitions. We also had nine players enter the Far North Coast Baseball Association in their Winter competitions.

We also moved from Banora Point to Arkinstall Park at Tweed South. An approved NSW Government Grant of $325,000 to complete facilities at Arkinstall Park will place us in a position to see a further increase in players in 2023/24
